El-Sadat explains his reasons for rejecting the request of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar and Al-Gheriani who demanded him not to withdraw and to attend the voting

With my full conviction that Egypt is in a dire and urgent need for a constitution that organizes it affairs, separates its authorities and moves the wheel of its life and development, and with all my due appreciation to all the justifications for the need to end the crisis of the constitutional declaration and the recent decisions caused by the President in immunizing his decisions and overruling the authority of the judiciary. Will all this I can not imagine posing a constitution for referendum without giving it its full share in drafting and reviewing, especially with the withdrawal of all the powers and the civil representatives of the churches, trade and farmer unions and many public figures who were all members of the Constitution Constituent Assembly.

We have all seen the division and severe rejection among the Egyptian people and the concomitant violence, rioting and calls for demonstrations in millions throughout the plazas of Egypt to brag about powers and to achieve the aspirations and interests of some political personalities at the expense of the security and safety of our country, which I rejected at large.

I was and am still with the legitimacy of the elected President and with giving the nascent experience of democratic transition its full chance. Still the major responsibility lies on the President and the majority who represent the political Islam in making this experience a success by providing tranquilizing messages and by showing positive attitudes and actions to contain the rest of the political powers, women and Copts since we are all partners in the January-25 revolution, and since we are all Egyptians enjoying the same rights, freedoms and duties and since we all belong to this very country.

Hence I will join forces with the loyal Egyptians in every effort and toil to defuse this crisis and the implications which the coming days will bring after the assembly endorses the constitution and poses it for public referendum and in case any judgments are issued by the Supreme Constitutional Court invalidated the constituent assembly and the Shura Council elections which is expected to take place.

May God protect this country and its people!

Muhammad Anwar El-Sadat
