Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, met with the family and students of Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman during a sit-in at the US Embassy. El-Sadat assured them that he will do all he can in order for the elder Abdul Rahman to be released after his lengthy US custody and returned safely back to Egypt. This requires treating Abdul Rahman, whose health is deteriorating, to be treated compassionately and with all required humanitarian rights.
El- Sadat stated that he requested the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to work diligently for the immediate release of Abdul Rahman. In a recent meeting with the US Congress delegation in Egypt, attended by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry representative, El- Sadat urged the US government for a quick release.
El- Sadat added that any Egyptian detainee in any country in the world should be treated with respect to their human rights and according to the internationally approved rules for prisoner treatment. He also added that the Human Rights Committee is placing the issue of the Egyptian detainees abroad among their priorities given the fact that they are citizens of this nation and their rights should not be violated at any cost.
