Statement of Reform and Development Party on the events of Maspero

The Reform and Development Party confirms that what happened last night does not, under any circumstances, justify the killing of Egyptians who were just voicing legitimate demands about passing a common worship law and requesting the punishment of those involved in the acts of aggression on any places of worship. The best reaction would have been to consider the demands of the demonstrators and to study then seriously and instantly.

Yet, what happened last night only confirms the need to re-consider the history of the bitter facts that involve the unity of the citizens of the single homeland. The party calls for treating all the Egyptians who were killed during the sad incidents of Maspero as martyrs and calls for declaring a state of official mourning on all the souls that were lost in the event. Any attempt to circumvent the truth or to place the responsibility of what happened on the protesters --by some of the political powers or evil instigators-- will open the door to a sectarian strife that all the sons of the nation will suffer from.

The party sees that it is not a mere coincidence that these events should occur after the celebrations of October victory and while preparing to announce the discontinuation of the state of emergency and the issuance of a political apartheid law in preparation for the upcoming elections. All of this confirms the aide coming from the remnants of the former regime inside and outside the prisons and confirms that they bear the bulk of the responsibility for what happened last night.

The party emphasizes the need for conducting an impartial investigation to determine the instigators and perpetrators of the incident and bring them to trial. The party appeals all the citizens, Muslims and Christians, to unite in the face of anyone who tries to ignite strife or drive a wedge between the people of the one nation.

The party is studying the possibility of boycotting the parliamentary elections because of the collapse of security in the country at this serious and sensitive stage.

Thus said, the executive office of the party announces that they will remain in permanent session.
