El- Sadat to Minister of Foreign Affairs: Egypt to join the Arab Human Rights Committee

Mr. Anwar El-Sadat, Head of Reform and Development Party (RDP) calls Mr. Ambassador/ Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs for joining the Arab Human Rights Committee "the Pact Committee". This committee is the first in the region to follow up issues of human rights and basic freedoms. The Committee is also concerned with reviewing the reports of the Sates Members to that committee and monitoring the execution of the measures taken by the States Parties in an attempt to implement the rights and freedoms stipulated in the Arab Pact. This mechanism is prescribed in the Arab Pact for Human Rights.

El-Sadat highlights that the Committee Members are astonished that Egypt is not a Member State. They said that Egypt's role is only supervising which is an incredible and unexpected fact. However, Egypt has signed and subscribed to all Human Rights documents of the League of Arab States (LAS). Further, the Headquarters of the LAS is in Egypt and its Secretary General is Egyptian. It is unexpected from Egypt not to be a member state in the Arab Human Rights Committee.

El-Sadat stresses that Egypt has disagreement with certain articles in the Arab Pact. However, that should not hinder joining the Arab committee and expressing the points of disagreements. Egypt may also call for amending the articles that we disagree with. We should urgently join this Committee.
