El-Sadat to the government: Hands off the civil society! The new law is rejected!

Mr. Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, board member of the General Federation of NGOs and PA member, rejected the government's introduction of the draft law for NGOs, which puts several constraints on their work and activities. He stressed that the law did not take into account the growing involvement of the civil society and the inevitability of its participation in any future amendments to the laws of NGOs being a cornerstone and an important role in the development process of Egypt.

El-Sadat considered the law as a mere "civil fake decoration" and an unprecedented way of dominating over the civil society institutions that goes far beyond what Egypt has witnessed since July 1952 of nationalizing all the political, party and syndicate activities. The law incriminates all forms of unregistered organization which will prevent many organizations from exercising their development activities till they have access to the official license they applied for since years. He openly called the government to lift its hand off the civil work and to leave the civil society the freedom to work out their own laws in order to promote independence and enable them to exercise their vital roles. He further called upon SCAF and the Ganzoury government to work on protecting the institutions of civil society, Egyptian and foreign, and on ensuring their freedom of practice, as well as the domestic and international funding in the framework regulated by the law. He asked them to build bridges of trust and cooperation between the government and the civil society instead of diligently working on restricting and dominating over them with their interferences and arbitrary practices that are exercised by the security bodies against the civil work and development in Egypt.

He pointed out that there is an organized campaign to distort and uproot the civil society organizations, activists and human rights people which seems so strange and obvious especially when it is taking place after just one year from the revolution.
